Pick Ups and Strikes

Having spent the past few years working on several rapidly canceled TV shows, I was rather pleased to get the news this morning that “Pushing Daisies” was picked up for a full season order. There’s hope yet for good programing on American TV. And to think – people are even watching this show! The same can’t be said for most good TV.

Now we just have to hope that the potential writers strike doesn’t put us all back in the unemployment line and end television as we know it. If you haven’t had your fill of reality TV, you can be sure to see plenty more of it should this strike happen. And it’s very likely it will.

Although I realize it’ll potentially put me out of work, I support the writers on this one. The producers are arguing that they shouldn’t have to pay residuals on internet downloads because it’s a developing medium and people aren’t sure where it will lead. Yeah. Cause iTunes is really just a passing fad. This was the argument they made during the last round of negotiations about DVDs and the writers got screwed, so I can’t say I blame them for fighting tooth and nail this time.

I sometimes wish my union had any power at all and editors even got to think about residuals. But that would mean others would have to recognize the work editors do. And in order to recognize it they’d have to understand it. And people, even industry types, don’t really have a clue as to what editors do. But that’s a gripe for another time…

When you go to a Springsteen show you don’t expect this.

The Radiohead album is out and sounds pretty good so far. However I will say that I agree entirely with Whitney Pastorek over at Entertainment Weekly when she said about Radiohead that “everything from Kid A onward is rather a blur to me, as I am the type of gal who likes it when you sing her a song, not just throw a bunch of nifty sounds into a blender with some ice and pour them on her feet”. Yup. Radiohead and I aren’t ever going to be as close as we were in the OK Computer days.

As you all well know, Pushing Daisies premiered last week. What you might not know is that we did really well. Now we just need people to keep watching, so be sure to tune in tonight. And next week. And then the one after that.

This is really funny:

Lastly, here’s a great way to waste time on the internet. You know you love it.

In Rainbows

Radiohead has announced that they’ve got a new album called “In Rainbows” coming out in 10 days. And they’re not using a record label. This is a big deal. Really big deal. No band of this size has ever tried to cut out the middle man, so it’ll be interesting to see how it goes. I’m rooting for them, that’s for sure.

Even bigger deal: the only place you can download the album (legally) is their site, And YOU GET TO DECIDE how much you pay. Craziness! What a bold move, trusting your fans. I pre-ordered it a few minutes ago (it’ll be available for download on the 10th) and paid £7 which works out to about $14. I look at this way: an album on iTunes costs $10. So I could have just done £5 without feeling guilty. BUT – I love that they’re doing this and want it to work so I figure the extra 4 bucks will help offset the download someone else does for free. Right?

I’ll be curious to see what the average price people pay is.
